My teaching philosophy
As a teacher, I actively strive to introduce students to scholarship in a way that sparks their passion for the topic and prepares them to be future citizens. A core tenet of my philosophy is that every student has the right to succeed, regardless of where they came from. When I teach, my primary objective is to equip students with tools necessary not only to function well in a political science classroom, but also in the world beyond the classroom. As a result, I am committed not only to ensuring that students understand the substantive components of key ideas, theories and arguments in a given class, but focus on how exactly these theories are tested and arguments developed. The goal is to develop a student body with critical thinking skills and an understanding of the scientific method, so that ultimately they become skeptical consumers of information in a world that is full of questionable information sources. I strive to achieve that goal by fostering student engagement and utilizing active learning techniques, since I believe that education is a social endeavor. I aim to continuously provide and elicit feedback, which I implement through the usage of relevant classroom technologies.

Resources
I take teaching very seriously, but when I was designing my first class, it was an overwhelming experience, and I had a hard time putting it all together. In an effort to streamline my own thoughts, and in hopes of making this easier for others, I wrote a short guide. It includes some of the advice I received before I taught, as well as some of my own "innovations" and experiences as a teacher, dealing with managing the class, constructing a syllabus, etc. You can download it here:

My courses
Media and politics
  • In the summer of 2017, I designed and taught my very first course. It was an upper level undergraduate Media and Politics class at UBC. Here is the syllabus.
  • In the summer of 2018, I had a chance to teach a slightly revised version of this course at Simon Fraser University. The syllabus is here.
